Against a global backdrop of receding rights for women and girls, as well as collective crises like climate change, conflict, and natural disasters, HeForShe gathers political, business, global development and social justice leaders to commit to accelerating progress on gender equality in their companies, campuses, communities and countries. While UN Women recently reported that, at the current rate of progress, it may take close to 300 years to achieve full gender equality, HeForShe urges men to do their part in accelerating equality in whatever capacity they can.

In 2023, the UN Trust Fund and its grantee partners worked together to provide crucial prevention initiatives, lifeline specialist support, and enhance effectiveness of policies that safeguard the rights of women.

In mid-August 2021, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka will complete her second and last term as Executive Director of UN Women after eight years at the helm of the organization. In 2021, the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women (UN Trust Fund), managed a grants portfolio of 157 projects aimed at preventing and addressing violence against women and girls in 68 countries and territories, across five regions, with grants totaling $74.7 million. The year 2021 was pivotal as the UN Trust Fund introduced its Strategic Plan 2021-2025 with a vision to enable civil society, especially women’s rights organizations, to play a central role in delivering survivor-centered and demand-driven initiatives to end violence against women and girls. Under the new Strategic Plan, the UN Trust Fund invested in organizational resilience, flexible and long-term funding and new trainings to empower and sustain grantee organizations, including during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2018, the UN Trust Fund launched the Special Funding Window to support civil society and women’s rights organizations working to end violence against women and girls living with disabilities. Over the course of the funding window between 2018 and 2020, over 28,500 women and girls with disabilities directly benefited from UN Trust Fund-funded projects, from prevention to maintaining and improving quality specialist support services, to institutional changes. The role of civil society and women’s rights organizations in ensuring the safety, dignity and freedom of women and girls living with disabilities is undeniable. In 2021, the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women (UN Trust Fund) commemorates its 25th anniversary: a 25-year journey of grant-giving, support, and dedication to empowering civil society organizations and women’s movements.

Movimiento de mujeres indigenas TZUNUNIJA/IXTZUNUN, a UN Trust Fund grantee under the Spotlight Initiative, a Guatemalan women-led network of organizations working to end violence against indigenous women which focuses on the Mayan and Garifuna ethnic groups, is leading a project to improve the justice system to the specific forms of violence affecting indigenous women and increased the visibility of this issue. Watch them share about their adaptations during the pandemic to make sure justice services and responses are available for their primary beneficiaries.
